The invention relates to an apparatus for 2D adaptive generalized partial response equalization that is used widely at the front end of all signal detection engines such as Viterbi and BCJR. The idea is applicable to 2D optical memories as well.
BACKGROUND
Magnetic recording channels are characterized as slowly time varying media due to wear and tear, temperature variations and other factors. Several partial response (PR) target design techniques are available for 1-D magnetic recording channels by having linear equalizer that
adapts to varying channel conditions so that the signal detection is not impacted. Two Dimensional Magnetic Recording (TDMR) channels have 2-D Inter Symbol Interference and therefore, signal processing is difficult in comparison to 1-D recording channels. There is great
need for PR equalization in 2-D ISI channels due to high computational complexity of the 2-D detection algorithms.
TECHNOLOGY
The technology relates to equalization process for tackling issues of time varying nature of two-dimensional magnetic recording systems. The filter coefficients of both equalizer and the partial response target are jointly adapted to mitigate the effect of signal-to-noise ratio variations.
