Researchers from IISc have fabricated biosensor strips for low cost-diabetes screening and monitoring. The strips use low cost membranes for fabrication and has enhanced stability and longer shelf life at room temperature storage conditions. The biosensor strips are also fabricated for bio-analytes including glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol, urea, antigens, and antibodies.
BACKGROUND
Currently available glucose meters are fabricated with three principle enzymes glucose oxidase, glucose dehydrogenase and hexokinase. Each enzyme has its own advantages and disadvantages in the application. Semi-quantitative assay of glucose is also carried out with
visual readout blood analyte test kits, however they suffer from limitations including very short shelf life, performance issues and high cost of strips. Glucometer performance also gets affected environmental exposure and patient factors (anemia, hypotension etc.).
TECHNOLOGY
The invention provides biosensor strips for detection of blood glucose/analyte.
Key features of the invention:
- Longer shelf life
- Use of low cost membranes like nylon, paper, cotton fiber etc.
- It can be used for various bioanalytes like glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol, urea, triglycerides, antigens, antibodies etc.
- It has computing device to estimate the amount of analyte.
COMMERCIALIZATION
IISc has filed an application with complete specification (Application number: 7047/CHE/2015) for grant of patent in India.
